In 2006, I was fortunate enough to spend a week getting to know 30 teens from across the province at the Miss Teen BC program. At the end of an incredible week long journey, I was blessed to be named Miss Teen BC 2006 and spend the next year of my life advocating for my platform, to identify and bring to light the use of inappropriate language and how it affects others.
Through the implementation of an hour-long active workshop. I will never forget one workshop I was able to attend at Semiahmoo School. A couple days after the workshop, I received an email from a participant who described to me that they had the intention of committing suicide that night but because of my workshop they decided to keep fighting for their life. What an amazing experience it is to make a difference.
The desire to continue to make a difference has followed me through my life journey. Now, I am completing my Masters of Science in Physiotherapy at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Every day, as a physiotherapist, I get to educate and treat people about their body and how to live a healthy life. What a privilege!
This program has taught me that no matter your situation, you have the power to make a positive impact on others whether it be through volunteering, your career choice or even a simple smile. Miss BC is not centered around physical beauty, but rather empowerment and giving women the chance to live up to their fullest potential while creating life-long friendships and developing life skills. No matter your background, faith, self-esteem or ability, this program is for you and the chance for you to live a fuller life.
